The steel industry is an industry that consumes a lot of resources and energy. Data show that in 2010 China consumed 920 million tons of finished iron ore, 330 million tons of coke, and energy consumption accounted for 13.9% of the total social energy consumption. Considering that China needs a process to change the mode of economic development, the original development mode will still maintain a certain inertia for a period of time. The growth of domestic crude steel consumption will remain at a high level in the early stage of the "Twelfth Five-Year Plan". The Ministry of Industry and Information Technology predicts that Long-term crude steel consumption may enter the peak arc top zone during the "Twelfth Five-Year Plan" period, and the highest peak may appear between 2015 and 2020, with a peak of about 770 million to 820 million tons.

 

With the rapid development of the domestic steel industry, the trend of global allocation of iron ore resources in China has taken shape. In 2010, there were 40 sources of iron ore imports in China (the number has expanded to 63 in 2011), and the import volume was 618 million tons, accounting for 67% of the total iron ore consumption, an increase of nearly 32 percentage points over ten years ago. . Driven by high ore prices and high returns, from January to October 2011, domestic iron ore output also increased by 26.4%, and imported iron ore increased by 10.9%. The growth rate of domestic ore was faster than imported ore.

 

The Ministry of Industry and Information Technology stated that during the "Twelfth Five-Year Plan" period, the contradiction in the quantity of China's iron and steel industry has been greatly weakened, and the adjustment of product structure is no longer an increase or decrease in quantity, but must focus on improving the quality of steel products, promoting the transformation and development of downstream industries, and promoting Resource saving, energy saving and emission reduction. For large-scale and wide-ranging steel products such as reinforced steel bars, wire rods, medium and heavy plates and hot-rolled strips for construction, attention should be paid to improving quality, grade and stability.
